Worshipful Mayor in his budget announcement for this year 2010 – 2011, declared that a De- addiction centre provided with 20 beds opened at Mirza Hyder Ali Khan Street Div 111 Zone VII. Rs. 50 Lakhs (Rs. Fifty Lakhs) has been allocated for this project and it was inaugurated by the Honourable Deputy Chief Minister, Thiru. M.K.Stalin on 28.11.2010.
This Project was incorporated by the Chennai Corporation and The Hindu Welfare Centre.
A survey done by The Hindu and TT Ranganathan Clinical Research Foundation among about 25,000 conservancy workers , it was found about 10 – 15 % were found to be addicted to alcohol. So, Chennai Corporation intends to treat the conservancy workers and also the general public for de- addiction, and to rehabilitate the individuals and their families. A consultant Psychiatric of Chennai Corporation has been appointed for this project. In addition, daily out patient services with Lab facilities will be provided.
Patients addicted to Alcohol need specialized intensive treatment to abstain from substance abuse. Special focus will be given to the following aspects.
· Treatment for insomnia, withdrawal symptoms and co existing mental disorders.
· Effective individual and group counselling will be provided. An understanding empathetic and supportive approach will be provided.
· Alcoholic Anonymous will support in recovery.
The public health department announces that Chennai Corporation staff and general public can make use of this opportunity and benefit from this centre.
